Music is a powerful force. It’s both deeply personal and universally shared. Two people can hear the same song and experience different feelings, yet still connect with the music.

The second week of ADS 2026 explores the genre Afrobeat, a unique blend of music that originated in West Africa and now dominates the world due to its universal appeal.

Pioneered by popular Nigerian musicians Fela Kuti and drummer Tony Allen, Afrobeat fuses traditional Nigerian Yoruba music, Ghanaian highlife, American funk, jazz, and soul.

Enjoy this selection of contemporary African music from across the continent and its diaspora.
