The Secretary-General met today, 21 September 2010, with H.E. Mr. Emomali Rahmon, President of the Republic of Tajikistan. The Secretary-General and the President discussed progress toward the Millennium Development Goals in Tajikistan. They also discussed regional issues of peace and security, including the threat posed by drug trafficking and terrorism. They affirmed the importance of regional cooperation in addressing shared challenges, including counter-terrorism measures and water management in the region. The Secretary-General congratulated the President on the successful Conference in June on the International Decade “Water for Life.” He thanked the President for his country's strong support for the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA).
