Capacity Building for Transformation
Capacity Building
Technology transfer is not, by itself, sufficient for inducing technological development. Effective utilization and deployment of acquired technologies and their absorption and scaling up will depend on the level of development of domestic STI capacity and the policy and regulatory environment that supports the STI ecosystem. It is important, therefore, that the support provided by the Technology Bank is not limited to identification and deployment of technologies only but also includes creating – in partnership with key national and international partners – the enabling environment necessary to sustain local technological capability building through learning, absorption, scaling up and building the capacities for innovation, including the effective utilization of indigenous technologies.
Programmes & Initiatives
The General Assembly resolution 71/251 together with Charter of the Technology Bank reaffirmed the importance of promoting and facilitating the identification and utilization of and access to appropriate technologies by the least developed countries, as well as their transfer to the least developed countries.
Based on the findings and recommendations of Technology Needs Assessments (TNAs), the UN Technology Bank ensures that the support provided through the transfer of technology is tailored to specific areas or sectors where technological solutions will result in meaningful impact. The support that the Technology Bank provides to the LDCs is currently focused in four thematic areas as derived from the 14 TNAs that the Technology Bank has completed to date. These include:
- Agriculture and food systems
- Environment, climate change and resilience
- Health; and
- Education and digital skills development
